Government communications have intensified since the morning, following a long night of consultations aimed at forming the new government.
MTV sources indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding the name of former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank Raed Charafeddine to be the fifth Shiite minister, with his nomination being supported by Presidents Joseph Aoun and Nawaf Salam. However, significant objections to his candidacy remain.
Regarding the talks of the past few hours, sources revealed that the discussions to overcome obstacles in forming the government have focused in recent days on President Aoun, Prime Minister-designate Salam, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Additionally, former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt from Paris and the head of the Democratic Gathering bloc, MP Taymour Jumblatt from Beirut, have been actively involved through several initiatives and contacts, particularly through MP Wael Abou Faour, who visited Berri on Thursday night after a failed Baabda meeting. Abou Faour presented several proposals, including the name of Nasser Al-Saidi, who informed Berri and Jumblatt on Friday morning of his approval.
However, according to sources, Saidi rejected the Ministry of State for Administrative Development Affairs, prompting consultations with Aoun and Salam, who suggested the Ministry of Economy, a proposal that was accepted by all, including Saidi. Yet, he soon informed Aoun and Jumblatt that he no longer wished to hold a ministerial position.
Communications resumed late into the night between Aoun, Salam, and Jumblatt, with dozens of names being discussed amid the insistence of both the President and the Prime Minister-designate, with Jumblatt supporting their stance in not allowing any party to control the government's decision and insisting on a neutral, independent candidate.
The discussions also involved external parties, and contacts remained open until midnight.
Will the next few hours bring the formation of Salam's government?
