Former President Michel Aoun stated that "Lebanon is currently facing a major threat stemming from three key challenges.
First, Israel's ongoing aggressions and violations of Lebanese sovereignty without any deterrent, leading to daily casualties and martyrs in their villages and lands, despite the ceasefire arrangements related to the implementation of Resolution 1701. Second, the rampant smuggling and illegal crossings along the Lebanese-Syrian border, which has been infiltrated by various groups, resulting in escalating incidents, armed confrontations, and attacks on villages and towns in the eastern and northern border regions—some of which have reached the level of kidnappings, killings, and brutal executions of Lebanese citizens. The warnings issued by local officials and residents in these areas are signals of an even greater crisis ahead. Third, the increasing number of Syrian refugees, with no clear Lebanese or international plan to address the issue, despite recent political shifts in Syria that eliminate any justification for their continued stay. This is further exacerbated by the recent waves of new arrivals."
Aoun added: "Officials must take immediate action to safeguard the country and its citizens and bear their historic responsibility in confronting these existential challenges. These developments necessitate the convening of the Higher Defense Council to take appropriate measures to counter the threats to Lebanon’s security and stability. This is not a choice but an obligation for those in power. No Lebanese should assume they are immune to the consequences of these dangers—what affects the South, North, or East impacts the entire nation, including its core. Do not underestimate or disregard these threats."
