Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with a delegation from the General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, led by Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain.
Following the meeting, the Lebanese Red Cross President, Dr. Antoine Zoghbi remarked, “The President of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent is here today to show support for the Lebanese government, the Lebanese Red Cross, and the people of Lebanon.”
In turn, Chapagain emphasized the humanitarian focus of his visit.
“I am here in Lebanon driven by humanitarian concerns. I just concluded a meeting with the Prime Minister, where I had the chance to discuss some of his concerns. The main purpose of my visit is to connect with the Lebanese people and the Lebanese Red Cross, which has been doing extraordinary work to enhance humanitarian response. Today, we will launch an emergency appeal to support the Lebanese Red Cross, which has been leading efforts from day one, prioritizing emergency and medical services, blood supply, primary healthcare, and rescue operations. Our goal is to rally the support of all 191 member societies, along with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Federation, to strengthen the Lebanese Red Cross’s capacity to provide essential humanitarian support during these critical times,” Chapagain said.
Additionally, PM Mikati received MP Dr. Abdel Rahman Bizri, who outlined concerns for the city of Sidon, which has been sheltering a significant number of displaced citizens following the recent Israeli escalation.
Bizri highlighted urgent needs for basic services and advocated for enhanced support for Civil Defense, which has limited resources.
"Despite its remarkable achievements, we are compelled to rely on the Palestinian Civil Defense to assist in covering the Sidon area and surroundings,” he noted. Al-Bizri added, “After contacting relevant ministers, we approached the Prime Minister to present our requests, emphasizing the need to bolster resources to manage the challenges of the current period.”
PM Mikati also met with Mohammad Reza Sheibani, the Special Envoy of the Iranian Foreign Minister for West Asia, with whom he discussed recent developments in the region.
