US officials announced that the Pentagon is preparing to deploy an additional 1,000 troops to support President Donald Trump's campaign to halt illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border.
They mentioned that about 500 additional soldiers from a unit based at Fort Drum in New York will be sent to the southwestern border. Around 500 Marines will be deployed to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where some of the detained migrants will be held.
Officials clarified that discussions regarding the deployment of troops are ongoing, and the numbers may be increased once additional details are finalized.
The Pentagon has been struggling to implement the executive orders signed by Trump after he took office on January 20. The first group, consisting of 1,600 active-duty soldiers, was deployed to the border last week. These efforts aim to carry out Trump's plans to expand the military's role in his campaign to close the borders and deport detained migrants to their home countries.
