Heavy rainfall led to severe water accumulation in a street in the Mirna Chalouhi- Sin el Fil area, as clogged drainage channels—choked by accumulated waste, debris, and a blocked combined sewage and stormwater system failed to absorb the deluge.
Acting swiftly, Minister of Public Works and Transport Fayez Rasamny instructed specialized teams to intervene, enabling technical crews to resolve the issue within minutes. Meanwhile, the committee overseeing drainage system maintenance affirmed that it has intensified patrols, particularly during winter, to prevent similar incidents.
Following up on the matter, Minister Rasamny announced that he had contacted Judge Georges Attieh, head of the Inspection Authority, who immediately launched an investigation in coordination with the ministry. Investigators will be dispatched to examine the circumstances of the incident, and Rasamny pledged full transparency in disclosing the findings once the inquiry concludes.
Addressing the public impact of the flooding, Rasamny clarified that the resulting traffic congestion was not solely due to water accumulation but also exacerbated by existing bottlenecks and the general confusion that often accompanies heavy rainfall.
Rasamny also emphasized that indiscriminate waste disposal was a major contributor to drainage blockages, worsening the situation.
In this context, the Minister urged citizens, municipalities, and street-cleaning and waste collection companies to uphold public hygiene standards. He stressed the critical importance of proper waste disposal in designated areas to prevent drain blockages and mitigate future incidents.
Rasamny reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to monitoring the issue and implementing all necessary measures to safeguard infrastructure integrity and ensure efficient stormwater drainage.
The MoPWT is expected to release an additional statement once investigations are complete, providing further details on the incident and the corrective actions taken.
