Following is a joint press release by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans of France, distributed by the French Embassy in Beirut:
"The ceasefire agreement signed on 26 November between Israel and Lebanon, which came into force on 27 November, provides for a ceasefire monitoring mechanism chaired by the United States. This ceasefire agreement is the result of diplomatic efforts undertaken over many months with the United States. France calls on all parties to respect it, over the long term, and to put an end to any action that threatens it.
France is represented within this supervision mechanism by Brigadier General Guillaume Ponchin. He will be supported by around ten military and civilian personnel from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
In close collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Israeli Defense Forces and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the monitoring mechanism will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. It will also work with the Military Technical Committee in Support of Lebanon to contribute to the re-energization of the Lebanese Armed Forces and their deployment in southern Lebanon, for which France reaffirms its support, as part of the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701."
