Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, speaking from Ain al-Tineh on Monday reaffirmed the League's support for Lebanon during its current crisis.
Aboul Gheit expressed hope that the needed breakthrough would not be delayed, warning that "the situation is critical, and the Israeli violence and loss of life, as we witness on the ground, saddens us deeply. It is regrettable to see such negligence from a power that has often spoken of principles on the global stage."
Aboul Gheit emphasized the importance of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, stating, "It is pivotal and must be implemented to the letter as soon as possible. We cannot tolerate the harsh treatment of UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon."
The Arab League Secretary-General, also highlighted key priorities, including an immediate ceasefire and the urgent election of a Lebanese president.
Furthermore, Aboul Gheit lamented the lack of a strong response from the UN Security Council to Israel’s attacks on UNIFIL, stressing, "Lebanon must receive guarantees that Israel will not resume its assaults. We also firmly reject any foreign interference on Lebanese soil."
