Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed his disbelief over the Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Qalibaf's statement that Tehran is ready to negotiate with France regarding the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
He stated: "We are surprised by this position, which constitutes a blatant interference in Lebanese affairs and an attempt to establish an unacceptable guardianship over Lebanon. We had previously informed the Iranian Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Shura Council during their recent visits to Lebanon about the need to understand the Lebanese situation, especially since Lebanon is facing unprecedented Israeli aggression. We are working with all friends of Lebanon, including France, to pressure Israel to cease fire."
He added: "The issue of negotiating the implementation of Resolution 1701 is the responsibility of the Lebanese state, and everyone is required to support it in this direction, rather than seeking to impose new guardianships that are rejected on all national and sovereign grounds."
