A statement issued by the media office of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati:
It seems that the organized groups operating under the banner of "demanding the rights of retired military personnel" have decided to transition to overthrowing the state and the Cabinet and imposing a complete paralysis on the country.
The Prime Minister is astonished by the on-ground movements that suggest the government is committing a crime by meeting to address public issues and administrative affairs. It appears that those active on the ground have deliberately chosen to ignore the position announced by His Excellency at the beginning of the session, which stated: "When we start examining the budget items, we will take essential steps and decisions regarding the rights of public sector employees. The proposed increases for current and retired civilian and military personnel are included in the budget draft. Meanwhile, we are taking temporary measures to provide social assistance to public sector employees until the budget is approved by the Parliament. This measure has been previously implemented for both active and retired military personnel."
What is happening in the streets is far from legitimate demands and has turned into suspicious movements that harm rightful demands and the military ethics that should be upheld by those advocating for the rights of retirees.
The Prime Minister, in fulfillment of his constitutional duties and national sense, has called for a regular session this afternoon to review and approve the agenda distributed according to procedures and within the deadlines set by the Cabinet’s internal regulations. These sessions will continue according to the rules and at the times deemed appropriate by His Excellency to complete the discussion of the draft 2025 budget law, after the Council listened to the Finance Minister’s report today and deemed the sessions open.
Mikati: The on-ground movement is akin to a coup against the state and the Cabinet
