The Ecuadorian authorities have declared an environmental emergency due to an oil spill that contaminated a river in the coastal province of Esmeraldas in the northwest of the country.
Last Thursday, a section of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) exploded in the El Vergel area near the Esmeraldas River, approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Quito.
According to Ecuadorian authorities, the explosion was caused by landslides in the region, which had experienced heavy rainfall.
