The Kataeb Political Bureau held a virtual meeting, chaired by Party leader Samy Gemayel. After discussing the recent developments, the following statement was issued:
1. On the 18th anniversary of the martyrdom of MP and Minister Pierre Gemayel, the Political Bureau, along with the Lebanese people, reflects on the sacrifices he made for Lebanon and its cause, without fear or hesitation. His martyrdom stands as a testament to the highest level of commitment to a free, sovereign, and independent nation. His voice has become a national compass, and its echo continues to resonate today.
2. The Kataeb leader briefed the Political Bureau on the outcome of his recent visits to France and the United States, briefing on the meetings he held with officials, and which are expected to continue in the coming days. Gemayel emphasized that the primary goal of his visits is to safeguard Lebanon’s interests in the ongoing negotiations, ensuring that discussions are not solely centered on the interests of Israel, Iran, or Hezbollah. He highlighted that the priority should be a ceasefire and the disarmament of groups, not only in compliance with international resolutions but also in respect of the Lebanese Constitution. After that, the focus should shift to building a State of law, partnership, and equality, with solid, stable, and enduring foundations.
3. The Political Bureau extensively discussed reports regarding ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hezbollah, mediated directly by the U.S., and agreements being prepared with some acceptable terms and others rejected, along with responses that need to be addressed.
The Kataeb Party questions who gave the right to the Iranian Supreme Leader and his advisor to intervene in these negotiations, dictate their terms, or decide whether to proceed with or halt the ceasefire. This intervention is, at best, audacious, and is seen as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and national dignity.
The Political Bureau also rejects Hezbollah being the sole negotiator, whether directly or through any intermediary. It also questions the source of authority for negotiators to accept or reject decisions that will bind Lebanon and its people for years to come. Given the critical nature of the current phase, the political bureau demands a process that adheres to constitutional principles, especially in the absence of a president, and stresses the necessity of informing the public about the realities of these deliberations.
In this context, the Kataeb Party reiterates its demand for Parliament’s involvement, ensuring it is fully briefed on the details of the proposed terms and is engaged in the decision-making process. This will allow enable the Parliament to fulfill its representative role in preserving the Lebanese people's right to decide on peace, a right that was denied when they were involuntarily dragged into war.
The Political Bureau emphasizes the importance of fully implementing international resolutions, particularly the decision to place all weapons under the exclusive control of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
4. The Political Bureau welcomes UNESCO’s decision to grant enhanced protection to 34 heritage sites in Lebanon to prevent their destruction in the ongoing conflict. It also commends the parliamentarians who signed the petition calling for this international protection, as well as the diplomatic corps, particularly Ambassador Mustafa Adib, who worked toward achieving this decision.
Kataeb Party rejects Hezbollah’s monopoly on negotiations, demands broader inclusion in decisions
