A new advertisement in the streets of Philadelphia shows Kamala Harris in an Eagles team uniform, holding a football with her name in prominent letters and the slogan "Official Candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles."
The NFL team confirmed that the ads are fake, stating in a social media post: "We are aware of the circulating fake political ads and are working with our advertising partner to remove them."
NBC Philadelphia reported that at least six fake ads were spotted around the city before being removed. It is unclear who is responsible for this.
The ads also included a link to a non-partisan website listing important election dates and resources for voter registration.
Meanwhile, Intersection Media, the company responsible for advertising at the bus stations where the fake ads were found, issued a statement claiming that the ads were not paid for and were forcibly placed in the advertising boxes.
Scott Goldsmith, Chairman and CEO of Intersection Media, said: "We are aware that many of our bus stations in Philadelphia have been vandalized, and that the paid version of the ad was replaced with an unauthorized version."
The statement noted that while the ad boxes are locked to prevent tampering, some individuals are occasionally able to open them and insert unauthorized materials.
Goldsmith clarified: "We have noticed that the Eagles and Intersection had no involvement in creating or posting this unauthorized version, and Intersection staff will remove the ads as soon as possible."
A Philadelphia city spokesperson confirmed to NBC that physical break-ins had occurred, saying: "This was not a digital breach. Whoever was responsible for the illegally posted posters broke into the securely covered advertising spaces and somehow placed the posters there."
