Former Primine Minister Najib Mikati issued the following statement:
With the announcement of the results of the parliamentary consultations conducted by His Excellency President Joseph Aoun with the honorable MPs, I contacted the Prime Minister-designate, Dr. Nawaf Salam, who is currently in The Hague, and wished him success in his new mission to form a government. I hope this government aligns with the principles and foundations set by the President in his inauguration speech and meets the aspirations of the Lebanese people, who yearn for the continuation of state-building and the strengthening of its authority across all Lebanese territories.
I would like to express my gratitude to the honorable MPs who nominated me or showed interest in doing so, appreciating their confidence. I also extend my thanks to the MPs who abstained from naming me, as they demonstrated a democratic approach that we uphold under all circumstances.
On this occasion, I also wish to thank all Lebanese citizens who supported the work of our government since its inception, particularly during the caretaker phase, which was filled with internal and external challenges, foremost among them the Israeli aggression on Lebanon and its political, security, economic, and social repercussions. In a short period, our government addressed urgent matters and laid the groundwork for dealing with the consequences of this aggression. The state also regained financial capabilities that it had long lost. As for reform projects, many draft laws were completed in preparation for their approval in Parliament.
Despite the difficult circumstances, our government ensured the continuity of the state and the functioning of its institutions.
It was my destiny to lead this nation during its most challenging times when many hesitated to take on the responsibility.
To our dear people, I extend my deepest gratitude. You have always been my source of inspiration and strength at every step. Your will and faith in Lebanon are what give me confidence in our shared future.
Throughout my tenure as Prime Minister, I adhered to a path of moderation, a principle I have followed throughout my political life, firmly believing that this country can only be governed through balance and consensus, away from exclusion and revenge. Past experiences have proven that there is no alternative to consensus, and that the path of confrontation has cost us many rescue opportunities.
I sincerely hope that the new phase will be truly transformative, bringing the Lebanese people goodness, peace, and peace of mind.
The challenges we face are undoubtedly immense, but the will of our people is stronger. Our unity and resilience are our salvation. Just as we overcame wars and crises together, we will rise again together.
