Caretaker Health Minister Firas Abiad attended the inauguration of WHO Academy in Lyon, France, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom, and health ministers from member states.
Abiad expressed gratitude to Macron for France’s support to Lebanon's healthcare sector, hoping for increased aid to rebuild war-damaged infrastructure.
In turn, Macron reiterated France's commitment to Lebanon.
Moreover, Abiad met French Health Minister, Geneviève Darrieussecq, with whom he discussed hospital partnerships and healthcare workforce challenges, and held talks with WHO’s Dr. Tedros on Lebanon's health system needs, including emergency preparedness and a central lab project.
During the work sessions, Abiad highlighted the systematic attacks on rescue teams during the Israeli war on Lebanon and advocated for protective measures.
The Health Minister also visited Lyon’s Léon Bérard cancer center and the International Agency for Research on Cancer to explore partnerships and discussed lab and primary care projects with Mérieux Foundation President Alain Mérieux.
