The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants announced that it has instructed Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to submit a formal complaint to the UN Security Council. The move responds to Israel’s ongoing and deliberate targeting of the Lebanese Army since the onset of its aggression on October 8, 2023, a campaign that has escalated significantly in recent weeks.
The complaint detailed a series of severe attacks on army personnel, installations, and vehicles recorded between November 17 and November 24, 2024, in the southern areas of Marjeyoun, Sarafand, and Borj El Mlouk–Qlayaa road. These assaults resulted in the deaths of 10 soldiers and injuries to 35 others, several critically wounded.
In its submission, Lebanon called on Security Council member states to condemn Israel’s repeated violations, labeling them as flagrant breaches of international law, the UN Charter, and relevant resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701.
The resolution underscores the Lebanese Army's pivotal role in maintaining security and stability in southern Lebanon by asserting state sovereignty in collaboration with the UNIFIL peacekeeping force.
The complaint emphasized that these attacks undermined international efforts to broker a ceasefire and destabilize ongoing mediation initiatives aimed at restoring calm to the region.
Lebanon interpreted the assaults as a clear signal of Israel’s rejection of diplomatic solutions, favoring military escalation over peace negotiations, the complaint read.
