UNIFIL has expressed deep concern over the ongoing attacks on the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) within Lebanese territory, despite the LAF's declared non-involvement in the ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. The attacks, attributed to Israeli forces, have resulted in the tragic loss of 45 LAF soldiers, with additional damage to premises and destruction of assets.
In a statement, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured. UNIFIL stressed that such strikes against the LAF are a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) and international humanitarian law, which prohibits the use of force against those not actively engaged in hostilities.
UNIFIL reaffirmed the critical role of the LAF in upholding Resolution 1701, which is vital for restoring peace and stability along the Blue Line and in the wider region. The escalating violence has caused significant destruction and loss of life, underscoring the urgency of a peaceful resolution.
The UN peacekeeping body called for all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue, emphasizing that peace must prevail over violence.
