MP Ibrahim Kanaan has submitted his resignation from the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM).
In his resignation letter, he stated:
"My family in the party, On August 14th, I held a press conference where I made a call to reunite within the Free Patriotic Movement, in line with my convictions, my journey, and the desire of the party base, which I consulted before taking this step. I allowed a week for a response to this call.
Six months prior, I took an initiative away from the media, through meetings that preceded and followed my letter to the party president on April 10, 2024.
The week's deadline has passed, and another week is nearing its end without any indication of willingness to respond to any unifying or rescue attempt. In fact, criticism of the initiative and myself personally began even before the press conference, in a way that reached the point of harming dignity.
Based on the above, and given that my attempt to reunite and preserve the strength of the group through unity did not find a receptive audience, And after I had the honor to try for months within the party frameworks, and through the party president, without achieving the desired response,
And since my thoughts, approach, and actions have always been in favor of unity and against division, nationally, politically, and within the party,
And inspired by President Aoun's words in his book "What I Believe": 'When I am told that something is impossible, I respond that it is my honor to still try,'
Therefore, in alignment with my journey and convictions, I am left with no choice but to resign from the Free Patriotic Movement, pledging to the people of Metn, the party members, supporters, and sympathizers to remain committed to the principles we grew up with, ensuring that their concerns remain my concerns, and their aspirations my aspirations, as we continue the journey that began years ago, for the sake of Lebanon."
