The European Union Ambassador to Washington, Juvita Nielopshina, revealed that the bloc is "ready to engage in discussions with the new US administration to address any potential trade tensions," at a time when President Donald Trump has expressed that the EU treats the US unfairly.
Nielopshina stated in a press speech, "We are ready to explore with the new administration ways to strengthen our relationship, whether in energy, defense, trade, or any other sector."
Earlier that same day, Trump remarked at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, "From the US perspective, the European Union treats us unfairly and very badly."
Nielopshina, on the other hand, emphasized that "We have a close, coordinated, and balanced trade and investment relationship."
Trump particularly accused the EU of "imposing tariffs and taxes on the United States," adding, "They make it extremely difficult to import products into Europe, while the 27 EU countries sell their products in the United States."
The ambassador highlighted that "The EU is the largest consumer of U.S. liquefied natural gas and Europeans are among the largest consumers of U.S. brands like Tesla and Apple."
She also noted, "At the same time, the EU is one of the top three export destinations for 46 US states, and EU investments at the national level support millions of jobs in the US."
In Davos, Trump stated that the US has "a deficit of hundreds of billions of dollars with the European Union," adding that "No one is happy about this, and his administration will do something to address it."
Nielopshina remarked that "The EU and the US are closely linked across the Atlantic, and our economies are integrated."
The ambassador also reminded the press of the EU's commitment to Ukraine, while Trump stated in Davos that "US efforts are underway to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine."
