At least six people have died in Japan due to Typhoon Shanshan, one of the strongest typhoons Japan has experienced. The storm has moved eastward, bringing heavy rains across large areas of the country.
Authorities have warned of possible landslides and flooding in a region extending hundreds of kilometers around the storm's center.
Footage broadcast by Japan's NHK showed damaged rooftops and cars submerged in rainwater on roads in southwestern Japan. The storm swept across Kyushu Island, causing record-breaking heavy rainfall.
The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported one person missing and over 100 others injured. Kyushu Electric Power Company stated that power was out for more than 35,000 homes in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu.
Typhoon Shanshan was tracked in the Pacific Ocean about 480 kilometers southwest of Tokyo and caused heavy rain as far north as Hokkaido, despite its intensity decreasing to a tropical storm on Friday. Wind speeds reached 90 kilometers per hour.
