Caretaker Health Minister Jamil Jabak said in a press conference on Tuesday that the Central Bank had earlier pledged to provide medical supplies at Lebanon's official USD exchange rate.
Jabak went on to explain that the aforementioned pledge had been altered by the Central Bank, "which is now planning to cover medicine only, without medical equipment."
"We are suffering from a huge shortage of medical equipment and supplies, and if this situation continues, we may reach a dangerous situation," he warned.
"There should be practiced no austerity in the medical and hospital sector. This sector is under threat, and we ask of the Governor of the Lebanese Central Bank to deal with this problem quickly," Jabak added.
He finally announced that the Central Bank had planned to transfer 50% of the USD at the official rate, whereas the other 50% must be borne by companies -- a thing which will consequently raise hospital prices.
