Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Raya Al-Hassan, on Monday expressed after receiving a shield of appreciation during a symposium on "Women in Saudi Vision 2030" at the United Nations House (ESCWA), support for the words of a foreign politician who had said that the absence of women from the economic and political life of a country was a huge loss.
"I believe in these words, not only based on the principle of equality, but also for the economic benefit of our societies in terms of sustainable development. I see great progress in this regard in our Arab countries. In Lebanon, women's representation is still low, but their participation in political life has become bigger," Al-Hassan said.
"On the level of Saudi Arabia, there are more advanced areas. There is progress, for example on the level of custody and personal status," the Minister added, anticipating more advancement in this regard.
She finally called on Lebanese women to "actively participate in the municipal by-elections," and said that women should exercise their right to vote, as it is a right guaranteed by the constitution.
