President Michel Aoun received on Thursday at Baabda Palace the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jan Kubis, with talks touching on the situation in the South and the interim forces' work.
President Aoun told DiCarlo that Lebanon is committed to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 since its issuance in 2006, while Israel continued its attacks against Lebanon by land, sea and air, most recent was the enemy drones' attack against Beirut's southern suburbs, in a dangerous precedent since the ceasefire after July 2006 aggression.
Aoun stressed that while Lebanon reserves its legitimate right to defend itself, it hopes that the international community will be aware of the seriousness of Israel's threat to security and stability on the Lebanese border.
The Head of State also indicated that the recent military developments on the Syrian-Turkish border constitute a serious development of the course of the war in Syria. He added that Lebanon is following up on this development, hoping it will not have repercussions on the unity of Syria and the current situation of the displaced Syrians, whose impact is increasing on Lebanon.
On the other hand, Aoun stressed that the Lebanese State is studying a series of measures aimed at activating the Lebanese national economy in all its sectors, indicating that the state budget draft 2020 will carry reforms that enhance internal and external confidence in the Lebanese economic situation.
DiCarlo congratulated the President on the UN General Assembly's adoption of his initiative to establish the "Academy for Human Encounters and Dialogue," placing the UN's potentials at the disposal of Lebanon to help complete this initiative.
The UN Official reiterated the international community's appreciation for Lebanon's hosting of the displaced Syrians, and for the cooperation between the Lebanese army and UNIFIL.
On the other hand, Aoun met with MP Fouad Makhzoumi, with whom he discussed the general situation in the country, especially at the monetary and economic levels.
