For his achievements and his professional background, for his services to the society and being the best model for AUB alumni, the AUB presented the award for the distinguished alumnus former MP Gabriel el-Murr during a dinner in al-Bustan Hotel-Beit Merry where a big number of social and media figures gathered.
“The distinguished figures like Gabriel el-Murr are the ones who give the University a true identity by representing its goals and playing a firm role in the wind of change to the best, not only in Lebanon but in the whole world”, said AUB President Peter Dorman who attended the ceremony.
Samir Traboulsi, President of Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB, listed a brief of MP el-Murr achievements during his professional and political background as well as his contribution to the society, Lebanon development and the support to the University till now.
“Despite receiving many awards in his life however this one means a lot to him especially that AUB taught him partnership as well as opinion’s respect”, confirmed el-Murr and stressed on the necessity to preserve the nation’s sovereignty by paying attention to the risks that Lebanon is encountering and that are threatening its existence.
“When war broke out in 1975, they turned it into a Muslim-Christian war. Today, we see that the battle has been transformed into a Muslim-Sunni scuffle. To where all this is going to lead us?
We are Lebanese and we want to build a country for our children to grow up in. I have 10 grandsons and granddaughters. Only 4 of them are here tonight to attend this ceremony. What have we left for them?
We are leaving behind an unjustified conflict. We are carrying weapons with no reasons at all, and making up either virtual or real causes that we believe in whether right or erroneous… Furthermore, these causes are not related to Lebanon.
Lebanon must be steered clear of all these causes that have only contributed in widening the rift between its people and categorizing them based on regional and partisan criteria, turning them eventually into individuals that only seek their personal interests.
And you, politicians, you have failed for a yearlong to agree on a new electoral law. And suddenly, upon the afflatus of the Holy Spirit, we found that you managed to convene and agree on extending the parliament's term for one and a half year in no more than 10 minutes!”, he said
AUB celebrates soon its 150 years and stresses the importance of communication between the University’s staff and alumni, every graduated who contributed in developing his country on all levels as former MP Gabriel el-Murr did.
