Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian, welcomed at Dar Al Fatwa Papal Ambassador to Lebanon, Paolo Borgia, with whom he discussed Lebanese and regional affairs.
During the meeting, Ambassador Borgia confirmed to Mufti Derian the Vatican’s will to “deepen and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two countries.”
In turn, Mufti Derian expressed his keenness on coexistence in Lebanon.
“There is no Lebanon without adhering to parity between Muslims and Christians,” Derian said, adding that the election of a President could restore balance to the Lebanese Republic.
“Lebanon endures the most dangerous and difficult conditions on its southern borders due to the permanent Israeli aggression, ongoing human rights violations in occupied Palestine, and genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” Derian said.
The Grand Mufti finally called on religious authorities to exert more pressure on the international community, especially decision-makers at the United Nations, to stop the Israeli aggression against Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian areas, “out of respect for human dignity and rights, so that peace and security can prevail in the region."
