The Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi, confirmed that "with the election of Joseph Aoun as President of the Republic, confidence has returned to the hearts of the Lebanese people and to Arab and Western countries." He congratulated "Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and the promising new ministers," wishing them success in the great tasks ahead.
In his sermon at the Mass for the Feast of Saint Maron, from St George Cathedral in downtown Beirut, Rahi called for "an end to the procrastination, the undermining of the judiciary, the loss of sovereignty and dignity, the violation of the constitution, and the political crisis," adding, "The people are suffocating from the stagnation; offer them a solution."
Rahi emphasized that "the real danger facing Lebanon is slipping into the axis of degradation, and as much as we must remain neutral in a positive way, we must align ourselves with the axis of civilization, renaissance, and progress." He pointed out that "neutrality is proposed to save Lebanon's unity; the country will remain in any case, but we want Lebanon to remain ours, as neutrality is not a project that contradicts our particularities and differing convictions; it is an existential system that protects pluralism in all its dimensions."
