The Kataeb’s political bureau, chaired by party leader MP Samy Gemayel, convened to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon, particularly the government formation process.
Following deliberations, the bureau issued the following statement:
The political bureau voiced concern over the direction the government formation process is taking, warning that the emerging conditions and demands are neither reassuring nor in Lebanon’s best interest. It emphasized that these also do not serve the presidential term, which must promptly begin implementing the inaugural speech that laid the groundwork for parliamentary consensus for the prime minister-designate’s nomination.
The Kataeb Party reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating the government formation process and maintaining a constructive approach, provided that the cabinet is cohesive in addressing the pressing challenges ahead. The party stressed that the new government must be free from internal traps that could hinder its work, ensuring a swift and effective start to the new presidential term while bolstering confidence both domestically and internationally.
Accordingly, the party reiterated its warning to the prime minister-designate and the president against any arrangement that could be exploited to paralyze the government—specifically, reliance on the finance minister’s signature as a veto tool, sectarian representation imbalances, or the obstructing one-third veto power. The party underscored that the top priority remains placing all weapons under the sole authority of the Lebanese state, ensuring that arms are exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces.
The political bureau also stressed the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire agreement and urged its immediate enforcement across all Lebanese territory before the extended deadline of February 18. It clarified that this is not about yielding to external pressures but rather fulfilling a promise made to the Lebanese people that they would enter a new era of equality under the rule of law and the constitution.
In light of the recent surge in murders, thefts, and violent incidents over the past two weeks, the Kataeb Party called on security forces to take firm action to restore order and prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
The political bureau urged an intensified deployment of law enforcement personnel in streets and neighborhoods to reinforce state authority, curb traffic violations, and conduct thorough identity checks on drivers. It emphasized that maintaining a strong security presence is essential to fostering a sense of safety, restoring public confidence and reestablishing the rule of law across the country.
