Caretaker Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi confirmed that "the crimes occurring are criminal in nature and have no security-related aspect," adding, "criminal offenses cannot be anticipated, but we will intensify security deployment, and security forces are catching the criminals within a short timeframe."
After a meeting of the Central Security Council, Mawlawi pointed out that "1,920 people were arrested for various crimes, which proves that the security forces are fulfilling their role, and preventive security measures are effective." He also mentioned, "we have instructed all security agencies to increase patrols and ban motorcycles in Beirut, and the rise in theft and snatching incidents has been met with an increase in arrests."
Regarding Syrians committing crimes and fleeing to Syria, Mawlawi said, "Arresting fugitives to Syria requires activating the International Communications Office, and the security agencies are working quickly to arrest any perpetrators before they leave Lebanese territory," noting that "the Lebanese Army is fulfilling its duties to secure the borders despite the challenges, and greater cooperation from the Syrian side is needed."
