Outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati has announced that the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel will continue to be in effect until February 18, following consultations with President of the Republic Joseph Aoun and House Speaker Nabih Berri.
“I have consulted with the President of the Republic and the House Speaker regarding the latest developments in the south and the outcome of the contacts with the American side tasked with sponsoring the ceasefire agreement,” said Mikati in a statement.
“After being informed of the report of the ceasefire monitoring committee, which is working on the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, the Lebanese government stresses the preservation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and the extension of the ceasefire deal until February 18, 2025,” he added.
He continued that at the request of the Lebanese government, the US will begin negotiations for the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after October 7, 2023.
