Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri welcomed Caretaker Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habi at the Second Presidency in Ain el-Tineh.
Bou Habib briefed Berri on the outcomes of his recent international meetings, with discussions covering general conditions and the latest political developments.
Berri also met with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert to discuss political and field developments in the country.
In a separate meeting, Berri welcomed Deputy Parliament Speaker Elias Bou Saab to address legislative matters and the current political situation.
In the wake of the meeting, Bou Saab highlighted two key topics. "We discussed Israel's blatant and unjustified violations of the ceasefire agreement, which expose its false claims of self-defense. These actions breach the agreement, which does not allow such aggression," he stated.
Bou Saab added that Berri assured him of the imminent activation of a monitoring committee to better enforce the agreement and reduce violations.
On the presidential election, Bou Saab confirmed that the January 9 parliamentary session will proceed as planned, emphasizing the need for consensus.
“We are working towards a candidate who secures 86 votes and represents unity, not division,” Bou Saab said. “Consensus is vital for Lebanon’s stability and reconstruction.”
Moreover, Bou Saab cautioned against electing a president by a narrow margin of 65 votes, which would deepen divisions.
“The next phase requires collective responsibility to ensure stability, restore trust, and begin rebuilding,” the Deputy Parliament Speaker concluded.
