“A number of my fellow MPs and I signed a letter addressed to the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, which included an appeal to protect the common heritage of humanity. The letter stated: During the devastating war on Lebanon, Israel committed gross atrocities and violations of human rights, and tore up international laws as well as the values on which the United Nations was founded. We denounce the loss of innocent lives and the forced displacement of families from their homes, and we condemn these acts that violate the sanctity of human dignity. We stand firmly with the mission of the United Nations in protecting lives, rights, and cultural heritage while recognizing the urgent need to preserve what remains of our common humanity. As parliamentarians, we appeal to you and draw your attention to the urgent need to protect historical sites in Lebanon, especially in Baalbek, Tyre, Sidon, and other precious landmarks that are at great risk as a result of the escalation of atrocities. These sites embody centuries of history, achievements, and human identity, and carry the profound values that connect generations. Protecting them is not just a national interest, but a responsibility to preserve a part of human civilization that belongs to our shared global and international heritage."
The letter went on, "As Director-General of UNESCO, you bear a profound responsibility to defend these priceless symbols of our shared human history. UNESCO’s mission – to promote peace through education, science and culture – render the protection of these sites very essential. We, therefore, call on you to urgently prioritize the protection of these historic sites, by mobilizing UNESCO’s authority, securing international attention, and advocating for all protective measures."
“This appeal goes beyond physical preservation; it is about protecting the traditions, stories, and values that these sites represent – a legacy connecting our past to our future. As representatives of the people and on behalf of communities whose identities are deeply linked to these cultural monuments, we appeal to UNESCO to respond to this urgent appeal. Your leadership, influence, and swift action are essential to ensure that this precious heritage survives as a symbol of unity and peace," the letter continued.
"With respect and confidence in your dedication to humanity’s shared heritage, we urge you to take all necessary steps to protect these cultural icons. Through UNESCO's support, we believe we can raise global awareness, secure international support, and strengthen the commitment to protecting these invaluable sites,” the letter concluded.
