The Permanent Mission of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York, following the instructions of the caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdallah Bou Habib, submitted a formal complaint to both UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council. The complaint responds to repeated Israeli attacks targeting UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon and the Israeli army's illegal demand for peacekeepers to vacate their positions, contrary to the mandate set by the Security Council.
Lebanon emphasized that "the Israeli attacks on UNIFIL are a dangerous precedent and a blatant violation of international law and Security Council Resolution 1701. These attacks highlight Israel's ongoing attempts to undermine UNIFIL's mission, its disregard for international legitimacy, and its non-compliance with international law and humanitarian law."
In its complaint, Lebanon called for "a firm and resolute stance against these attacks, which amount to war crimes, and for their strong condemnation. It also stressed the need to hold Israel accountable for these violations, to deter future occurrences, and to prevent casualties among UNIFIL forces, ensuring their ability to continue fulfilling their mandated obligations."
