January has always gotten all the hype for being the month of New Year’s resolutions. We put on our finest attire, go to a party and celebrate the beginning of a new year, a fresh start, yet another chance to get it right. We have been almost too dismissive of the powerhouse of change that is September, which has been proven through research to be the real month of transformation for most people.
Us Lebanese have had it especially rough for the past three weeks due to the war that has erupted in our land, therefore it was particularly hard to keep our wits about us. Nevertheless, it can only be beneficial to our mental health to start taking action, no matter how small, in the right direction. The tiniest action will help us regain a sense of control over our lives and over our fate.
Mel Robbins, the podcast phenomenon, shares why we should put our weight into going back to ourselves in the month of September and the Fall season for four specific reasons.
September is when life changes, the seasons shift, leaves turn into lovely shades of yellow, red and orange, the Fall foliage having been hidden all along underneath the green. The weather gets colder or warmer depending on where you live.
The Back-to-School effect in encoded in our DNA. We have been programmed since childhood to look at this time as the moment to roll up our sleeves and get down to business. Use it to go back to focusing on you. It can be setting up a side business, learning a new valuable skill, getting started on a book project.
Everyone is more productive and more driven in the Fall season. This Fall is very different and bleak that’s for certain. Nonetheless, you can go ahead and complete your homework after your full-time job. Channel the heightened energy all around you towards something that matters to you, into something that’s going to make you happier. If you’re at a loss to what that is, work on yourself. It is the single most valuable project and investment you could ever make, and it will improve all aspects of your life.
Parkinson’s Law, a law established in the 1950s, says any project you have expands to the amount of time you assign to it. On the first of January, you have twelve months to achieve those goals, while in September you have four months. The shorter the span, the more you’re going to get done. As a matter of fact, tight deadlines amplify the focus. To further support my case, according to a survey in Forbes Health, the average goal someone sets in January lasts around 3.7 to four months because that’s how long people usually stick to their resolutions. Precisely the number of months in the Fall season.
Lastly, frame the change as if you’re going to START eating gluten-free as opposed to you’re going to STOP eating bread. How you perceive it is imperative to achieve and maintain the change. Take into consideration that the Fall weather is ideal to give you optimum energy, you’re recharged from the summer, and you have the resources to invest in small or big improvements.
What are you waiting for? Focus on self-improvement now and make things happen!
