Major General Abbas Ibrahim said in an interview that the current Iraqi government will continue to supply Lebanon with fuel "but under conditions that obligate the Lebanese side to fulfill its commitments." He added that, "It is certain that the Iraqi state will continue to stand by us no matter the circumstances."
Major General Ibrahim, who brokered the deal with Iraq in 2021 to supply Lebanon with fuel under payment facilities terms, expressed "disappointment" with the way the Lebanese are handling the file.
Major General Ibrahim said, "I do not believe that the Lebanese side has fulfilled any of its obligations, which raises questions about the reason, and indeed one feels disappointed by this indifference, if I may say so."
He considered that Lebanon is "certainly committed and will remain committed to implementation after all the previous setbacks."
This was reaffirmed during the recent official visit of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati to Baghdad, during which a detailed mechanism for quantities and installment payments due every three months was established."
On another note, Major General Ibrahim received today at his office the Brazilian Ambassador to Lebanon Tarcísio Costa, accompanied by the military attaché and political advisor.
The discussion addressed the potential for escalation in the south, and Major General Ibrahim ruled out the likelihood of a full-scale war, considering that any potential escalation in Lebanon would be contained.
