Torrential monsoon rains have caused massive flooding in Queensland, Australia, resulting in the deaths of two women and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
The body of an 82-year-old woman was found in a field near the town of Ingham, while a 63-year-old woman died after a rescue boat she was on capsized after hitting a tree.
The week-long downpour has wreaked havoc on small rural towns along the state's northern coast, with rainfall equivalent to several months’ worth falling in just a few days.
The heavy rains forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes, caused the collapse of a vital bridge, and disrupted drinking water supplies in the hardest-hit areas.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said the state's northern coast is accustomed to tropical storms but noted that "the scale of destruction caused by this rainfall has been truly staggering."
