China Central Television announced that a fire broke out in a vegetable market in Hebei Province, northern China, resulting in the death of eight people and injuring 15 others.
The television station added that authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which started in the city of Zhangjiakou and was extinguished one hour after it began, around 8:40 am.
Videos shared by other media outlets on the Chinese social media platform Weibo showed large plumes of black smoke and large flames rising above the market in the Qiaoxi district of the city.
The business data website Qichacha reported that the market where the fire broke out, which some media outlets identified as the Li Guang vegetable market, opened in 2011 and sells goods ranging from fruits and seafood to electronics.
