Israel’s PM Netanyahu said his military must retain open-ended control over Gaza’s southern border area with Egypt – known as the Philadelphia Corridor – digging in on a position that threatens to derail ceasefire efforts.
Netanyahu has faced searing criticism in Israel for his position on the corridor, including members of his own military and security establishment who believe Israeli troops do not need to be permanently based in Gaza.
“Gaza must be demilitarised, and this can only happen if the Philadelphia Corridor remains under firm control,” Netanyahu told foreign journalists on Wednesday.
A former Israeli negotiator has said that while a quick deal with Hamas is possible to end the war, Netanyahu is intentionally obstructing it by insisting on Israeli control of the Philadelphia Corridor, which he called a “ploy”.
