Hindustan Times reported that Indian police have arrested a man who chained his American wife to a tree in a forest and left her there for 40 days.
The newspaper wrote that "the police in Sindhudurg district arrested the husband of a 50-year-old American citizen after she was found chained to a tree in a forest area."
It added: "The woman was found on July 27 by a herdsman grazing his cattle nearby, who then contacted the police. She was hospitalized after being freed from her chains. Unable to speak due to exhaustion and illness, she wrote that she had been in that condition for 40 days and that her husband told her she would die there when he chained her to the tree."
The victim was identified as American Lalitha K. Kumar. She stated that she is married to a resident of Tamil Nadu and has been living in India for about 10 years.
The police have opened criminal cases related to attempted murder, unlawful confinement, and endangering life and safety. The suspect's identity has not been disclosed at this time.
