A statement by the republic presidency's press office on Tuesday underlined President Michel Aoun's keenness on the powers granted to him by the Constitution and the post-Taef Agreement norms and practice, especially in terms of choosing the Deputy Prime Minister and appointing government members.
"The President of the republic is addressing the new government formation file as per the powers given to him by the Constitution, namely paragraph 4 of article 53, in addition to the enforced laws," the statement read.
"The President will not ignore the powers granted to him by the Constitution and the practice that followed the Taef Agreement, especially as to his right to choose a Deputy Prime Minister and a number of Cabinet members, through whom he is able to follow up on the government performance," it added.
The presidency's press office issued the statement in response to "comments made by politicians, journalists, and analysts tackling President Aoun's stances on the government formation."
