At least 36 people were killed, mostly of gunshot wounds, and more than 300 were injured during clashes in Egypt’s Port Said on Saturday. Clashes broke out after a local court had sentenced 21 people to death for their role in deadly riots after a football match last year, causing 74 fatalities.
Security was stepped up in Port Said in the aftermath of the rioting. The military has been deployed around key buildings as protesters tried to storm the city prison which led to gunfire.
In this regard, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged the Egyptian authorities to restore calm and order and called on all sides to show restraint, her spokesperson said
