Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Tuesday said in statement after the adjournment of the parliamentary plenary session at the UNESCO Palace that in light of the most recent external indicators and based on the outcome of his foreign visits, Lebanon had been receiving a great deal of support and efforts to help it.
"Yet, on the internal level, we witness confusion and efforts to invest in electoral campaigns, sometimes by a group that opposes the tenure, and sometimes by a group that opposes and attacks the government. But the biggest loser among these campaigns is the country," Mikati warned.
In response to those questioning the confidence given to his government and suggesting a new confidence vote in the Mikati-led Cabinet, the Prime Minister said, "Why not? Our papers are open, and we are ready to present all what we have in full transparency to clarify the problems we suffer from; if the Parliament is ready to cooperate with us, then this is essential because the country requires concerted efforts."
Regarding the Capital Control dossier, Mikati said, "This dossier was presented to the Parliament two months ago as a law proposal. The Parliament was the one to request the IMF's comments, and we have added them to the proposal before the Parliament did, so they've asked again that we refer it as a bill by the government, and this is what will happen."
In response to another question, Mikati made it clear that one of the current government's main tasks was to to hold parliamentary elections.
"I will not be tempted to resign so that my resignation will not be used to justify the disruption of elections. I will not be a reason to disrupt the elections, and for this reason I will not resign," Mikati concluded.
