Caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade Amin Salam has expanded his meetings in Washington following positive signals from the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump regarding Lebanon and the Middle East.
Minister Salam, who is currently in the U.S. capital, met with Enoh Ebong, the Executive Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), with whom he discussed enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting, which included Ebong and her team, focused on boosting bilateral economic ties, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, energy, and technology.
Minister Salam highlighted the importance of U.S. support for development projects in Lebanon, with a specific emphasis on sustainable infrastructure development, economic growth, and the creation of opportunities that serve both Lebanon’s and the United States’ mutual interests.
Discussions also centered on encouraging greater U.S. investment in Lebanon, particularly in post-crisis reconstruction efforts. The two sides explored how U.S. companies could play a role in rebuilding Lebanon’s infrastructure, while also providing technical and financial support for priority projects aimed at enhancing Lebanon’s economic growth and improving the living conditions of its citizens.
In addition, the U.S. side presented Minister Salam with a detailed study on the Qlayaat Airport, which was initially prepared fifteen years ago. The study was discussed in the context of potentially updating it if Lebanon decides to move forward with the development and operation of the airport.
At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to establish a communication platform between the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and Lebanon’s Ministry of Economy and Trade to track and advance a series of joint projects. These initiatives will contribute to the rebuilding of Lebanon's economy through a shared medium- and long-term action plan.
