Caretaker Information Minister Ziad Makary welcomed Belgium's new Ambassador to Lebanon Arnout Pauwels who has been in Lebanon for three months.
Ambassador Pauwels emphasized the "historical strength" of Lebanese-Belgian relations, affirming Belgium’s commitment to supporting Lebanon through "these exceedingly challenging times."
"We have been clear in our stance on the importance of respecting international human rights by all parties," Pauwels stated, adding that Belgium had condemned Israel's firing on UNIFIL and continues to push for an immediate ceasefire. He noted that humanitarian aid delivery was underway, stressing the need for effective distribution systems to ensure assistance reaches shelter centers promptly.
Impressed by Lebanon's resilience in facing “a sudden influx of a million displaced people within hours and days," Pauwels warned, “The rains are now beginning, which will make the situation even harder.”
Addressing Lebanon’s internal politics, Pauwels emphasized the need for reforms, including electing a new president, saying, "We recognize the need for domestic reforms, which depend on both the Lebanese people and its leaders, and we are closely following these developments."
