Makary stresses need to combat disinformation amid regional conflicts at UNESCO conference

Caretaker Minister of Information Ziad Makary attended the main conference of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 in Amman, Jordan, organized by UNESCO in partnership with the Hashemite Kingdom, represented by Princess Rym Ali.
The event was also attended by UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Tawfik Jelassi, and UNESCO Beirut Regional Office Director, Costanza Farina.
In the opening panel alongside ministers from Colombia, Jordan, Nigeria, and Armenia, Makary emphasized the critical importance of combatting disinformation, especially during times of conflict, such as the current Israeli aggression impacting Lebanon.
The Information Minister outlined the Lebanese Ministry of Information’s initiatives to counter misleading news that endangers social stability and public mental health, highlighting recent collaborations with UNESCO, including training ministry staff to verify information for publication on Factcheck Lebanon.
