Shootouts between hundreds of tribal warriors left at least 30 dead in Papua New Guinea's highlands, police said Monday, as security forces were given emergency powers to quell the violence.
Days of clashes between rival clans near Porgera -- one of the country's largest gold mines -- began with an incident in August, but have since spiralled into intense fighting that saw 300 shots fired on Sunday alone, according to commander Joseph Tondop.
