Hundreds of Israeli activists have stormed the courtyards of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque and performed Talmudic rituals there, according to Palestinian media.
Verififie footage shared on Israeli social media accounts, shows crowds of Israelis, watched by security officers, marching towards the mosque, chanting.
The march comes on the Jewish holy day of Tisha B’Av, which commemorates the destruction of the old temples.
Jordan’s Islamic Endowments Department, or Waqf, administers the Al-Aqsa compound, while Israel maintains security control. As part of this arrangement, Jews are prohibited from praying at the mosque compound. However, some right-wing Jewish Israelis believe that they should be allowed to pray, in an effort to upend the delicate status quo.
