During an emergency UN Security Council session on July 31, 2024, convened by Russia, China, and Algeria at Iran's request, Lebanon's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants condemned the recent Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburb.
The ministry labeled the assault a "serious escalation" that targeted a densely populated residential area, constituting a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the UN Charter.
Lebanon's Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Hadi Hashem, reiterated Lebanon's commitment to international legitimacy, its rejection of war, and its full adherence to Resolution 1701.
Hashem also emphasized that the primary condition for any peace initiative in the south is the end of the Israeli occupation of the Shebaa Farms, the Kfar Shuba hills, and the outskirts of the southern Lebanese town of Al-Mari.
“Additionally, Lebanon demands a resolution to its reservations on points along the Blue Line and an end to the Israeli land, sea, and air violations of Lebanese sovereignty,” Hashem added.
Lebanon’s MoFA also condemned Israeli attacks on other countries in the region, including the recent assassination in Tehran, highlighting Israel's aggressive intentions and its aim to widen the conflict. Lebanon finally called on the Security Council to reconsider its approach before it is too late.
