In response to the fire at Srar landfill in Akkar, Caretaker Minister of Environment Nasser Yassin engaged in urgent consultations with key officials.
Among those he contacted were Caretaker Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi, North Lebanon Governor Ramzi Nohra, Civil Defense Director General Brigadier General, Raymond Khattar, and Northern Lebanon Environmental Prosecutor Ghassan Bassil.
Yassin emphasized the necessity of "promptly extinguishing the fire, controlling it, mitigating its environmental and health impacts, and investigating the cause of the fire, which has led to cases of suffocation among nearby residents."
Minister Yassin also highlighted the progress made in resolving the waste crisis in the Akkar region. "Efforts to address the waste issue in Akkar have advanced significantly," he stated.
"In collaboration with the World Bank, we have secured funding from the Global Environment Facility to rehabilitate and operate the sorting plant and to construct a sanitary landfill cell in Sarar that meets all specifications. This lays the foundation for a sustainable waste management solution in Akkar Governorate,” Yassin concluded.
