We are following since yesterday the campaign on Social Media claiming that MTV Lebanon is against Freedom of Speech, following a series of warnings received by numerous bloggers and social media activists on their official pages.
We would like to clarify a few things regarding this specific issue, once and for all.
1. The warnings are being sent to any page posting content broadcasted on MTV, under YouTube, Facebook and Instagram rules regarding copyrighted content. The content is produced and owned by MTV and many of the shows have digital copyright to the format owners, which means the information it contains both video and audio, is a property of MTV, and is protected by intellectual property rights, and it is prohibited to publish or broadcast under the law.
2. MTV is not intending in any way to shut down pages of bloggers or activists. We totally respect the opinion of each and every person, and time proved that despite all the criticism we faced, we never opted to such options. We were shut down in 2002 by force for defending the freedom of speech, and we are not in any way intending to change our stands.
3. MTV has always been open to suggestions and criticism, and we invite anyone who has concerns to discuss them with us at any time.
In sum, rest assured that MTV was and will always be a space for the freedom of expression and intend to remain an institution that delivers the best to its audiences, and respect the values of our country and its unique culture.
