President Michel Aoun warded off on Tuesday concerns over vacuum at the legislative power, maintaining that the 1960 law will be effective if parties fail to agree on a new electoral law before the Parliament's term expires.
"Why are they scaring people with vacuum while the Constitution is clear? If the Parliament fails to endorse a new electoral law before its term expires, we must then abide by the Constitution and summon electors for polls within 90 days," Aoun explained.
"Therefore, the elections must certainly be held on the basis of the current effective law if an agreement on a new one fails," he corroborated.
Renewing rejection of the extension of the Parliament's mandate, Aoun highlighted the will to draft a new electoral law.
"The country will not be paralyzed," he stressed.
"I do not want the 1960 law, but if we do not reach a solution, do I just leave the republic unrestrained?" he said.
