A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced prominent Shiite cleric and anti-government protest leader Nimr al-Nimr to death after convicting him of sedition.
The verdict risks a further escalation of tensions with Saudi Arabia's minority Shiite community.
In Iran, Secretary General of Iraqi Hezbollah Sheikh Abbas al-Muhamadawi warned Saudi Arabia that imposing death penalty on prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr will put Saudi-affiliated figures and sites in danger.
"If the Saudis make such a mistake and execute Ayatollah Nimr, neither Saudi-affiliated figures nor sites in the region will remain safe," Muhamadawi told the Tasnim News Agency on Saturday.
His dire warning came against the backdrop of the reports that the Specialized Criminal Court in the Saudi capital Riyadh has sentenced Nimr to death.
"We have already warned the Saudi officials formally, and if they commit such a big crime, they will surely face its consequences," the Iraqi figure noted.
Muhamadawi also added that execution of the top Shiite cleric will tarnish Saudi Arabia's relations with the entire countries in the region and will trigger "freedom-seeking uprisings" in the kingdom.
On the other hand, Commander of Iran's Basij force Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi lashed out at the Saudi government for upholding the ruling for the capital punishment of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, and warned that the Al Saud are standing on the edge of the hell.
"If the Al-Saud commits such a crime against Ayatollah Sheikh al-Nimr, its move will not remain unanswered and Muslims will change this world to a hell for them," General Naqdi said, addressing a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday.
Meantime, he underlined that the death sentence should be seen as a verdict issued by a blasphemous and sinister regime and not a Sunni government against a top Shiite cleric.
A court in Saudi Arabia upheld a death sentence given to Sheikh al-Nimr this week. However, the enforcement of the ruling has been postponed.
The senior Shiite cleric is accused of delivering anti-government speeches and defending political prisoners.
Nimr was attacked and arrested in the Qatif region in July 2012. His arrest sparked widespread protests in the kingdom leaving several people dead.
